Biography

Laura Knowlton was born September 21, 1788 to Stephen Knowlton and Deidamia Chubb Knowlton in Winchester Twp., Litchfield Co., Connecticut.

"Laura Knowlton was one of a large family, who came with her parents to Ohio, from Winsted, Conn., in 1801-1802, and settled in Morgan Township, Ashtabula County. Col. Stephen Knowlton, of Revolutionary fame was of this stock."[1]

"Laura Knowlton married David Wright in 1810. They lived on the same farm for seventy-seven years, and had one son and eight daughters. She was much beloved by all who knew her. With many household cares she found time to nurse the sick and gather money for missionary purposes. Her house was the resting place for many fugitives from slavery. Her children revere her memory."[2]

"One of the oldest residents of Morgan -- Mrs. Laura Wright , mother of the ex-sheriff, died in that place on the 5th inst. in 87th year. She came from Connecticut in 1804."[3]
