Biography

Hannah was born October, 1777 in Wenham, Massachusetts, the daughter of Jonathan Knowlton and Hannah Morgan. This month and year of birth is proven by both gravestone inscription and the vital record of her death in which it states her age as 89 years, 6 months, 10 days.

Hannah married John Cleaves on May 3, 1798 in Wenham, Massachusetts.^[1]

The children of Hannah and John Cleaves were: Hannah who married Solomon Clark, Mehitable who married Daniel Appleton, Mary H. who married Nehemiah Preston^[2] and Rebecca who married Billy Elliott.

Please note that Hannah and John did not have a son Edward or Edward Jones Cleaves who lived in Saco, Maine. This is shown in many trees and is an error. Both the probate of John's estate in 1849 and Hannah's will dated May 11, 1855 prove they were survived by four daughters only and no sons.

Hannah passed away on April 18, 1867 in Beverly, Massachusetts. In her will dated 12 years earlier she mentions her three living daughters Hannah, Mehitable and Mary H. and grandsons Ezra, Edwin, John F. and Daniel W. Preston and granddaughter Rachal A. Elliott.
