Biography

Lydia Knowlton was born in the state of Vermont, February 21, 1800. [1]Her parents were purported to be Robert Knowlton and Rachel Perry...but its possible Perry may have died previous to May 1781, according to her profile, and that her actual mother may have been a woman with the surname of Pratt.

Lydia married Samuel McGeorge, September 27, 1821, in Meigs County, Ohio. [2]

She is listed in the 1850 Census, without her husband Samuel (who died in 1843) and living in Trenton, Delaware County, Ohio. List: [3]

  • Lydia McGeorge, Age 50, F, b: Vermont
  • Sylvester McGeorge, Age 24, M, b: Ohio
  • Laluska McGeorge, Age 20, F, b: Ohio
  • Eliza McGeorge, Age 18, F, b: Ohio
  • Margarett McGeorge, Age 15, F, b: Ohio
  • Washington McGeorge, Age 12, M, b: Ohio

In the 1860 Census, she is recorded as living with her daughter Eliza (McGeorge) Hammond, and her family, in Marshall County, Iowa. See profile for Rasselas Hammond

She died January 26, 1864, aged 64 years, 4 months, and 5 days. She was buried in Albion Cemetery, in Albion, Marshall, Iowa, USA. [1]

I unlinked Rachel Perry as mother to Lydia McGeorge nee Knowlton.

It is unlikely that Lydia is descended from Rachel Perry, as she would have been 48 in 1800 and very likely died prior to 1781. See Rachel's entry for a possible alternative of a Pratt as Robert's second wife.

According to Dan McGeorge, who travelled to Marshall County, Iowa, in May of 2018: Lydia is buried in Albion IA a very tiny town north of Carroll. Two of her sons Robert and Sylvester owned property not far from the cemetery. There are dozens of cemeteries around Carroll county but only one in the vicinity of Albion. The historical librarian there feels confident she had to have died there in Albion to be buried in that cemetery. In 1860 she was living with Eliza and RW in Albion however by the time of her death it’s possible she was living with Robert or Sylvester. In fact, since RW went into the military in 1861 it’s possible Eliza and her children stayed with one of her older brothers. Since they all lived in Albion, including Lydia, it’s likely that is where she died.
