Biography

George Knox was born in 1800[1][2] to Thomas Knox and Elizabeth "Betsey" Dewitt, in Clark County, Kentucky.[3][4][5][6] Family tradition holds that he was born in the area that was known as the Old Indian Fields, in Clark County,[3][7][8]

In 1829,[3] he married Rebecca Holmes,[9][10] also of Clark County, and together they had several children:[2][11]

  • Mary "Pollie" Knox, b. abt. 1830
  • James Harvey Knox, b. abt. 1832
  • Elizabeth Jane Knox, b. abt. 1835
  • William Knox, b. abt. 1837
  • John Thomas Knox, b. 1838
  • Adaline Knox, b. abt. 1840
  • Benjamin Knox, b. abt. 1842
  • Amanda Knox, b. abt. 1845
  • Sidney Knox, b. abt. 1848

George died in 1870, and is buried in the Knox Cemetery alongside South Fork Road, in the Powell County portion of Daniel Boone National Forest, near the town of Slade.[1]

Notes

If you follow directions to the Knox Cemetery given on the Findagrave site (go 3.3 miles south from where KY 1639 diverges from KY Route 15), you find that your are, in fact, in an area called "John Knox Hollow" (see Google Satellite view).

Possible ancestral family: this ancestry.com tree ($) bears striking resemblance to descriptions of George's ancestral roots in secondary sources, and even has a John Knox of approximately the expected age to have been Thomas Knox' father.

Many assert these were the Knoxes of Rich Square Monthly Meeting in North Carolina. That may be so.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

"We can trace back to a David Knox, who was born in CT in 1826. His father John was born in Ireland in about 1790...John is listed as having brothers Robert and Thomas..., both born in Ireland, but we don't know what happened to them. David must have moved to NY, since his son Charles (from whom we are descended) was born in NY and died in Binghamton, NY, where all my known Knox ancestors since then have been born."

Similar to story, "one of whom settled at Knoxville, TN, one in Michigan and one" in Massachusetts from here.
