There are two William Knoxes in the 1800 Kentucky Tax lists. If your guy is in the 1830 Vermillion, IL census, the father William could be one of the 1800 Kentucky Williams. One is in Bourbon county, the other in Clark County (where Thomas from prior comment was, as well): http://interactive.ancestry.com/3720/gpc_secondcensusky-0181?pid=15718
The William in Clark County, KY seems perhaps, maybe, to be gone from Kentucky by the 1810 census.
There is a male age 20-30 in this census of a much older William Knox in Illiniois. The head of the family William isn't the William b. 1807, but the eldest son could be: "United States Census, 1830," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHPY-JLL : accessed 4 November 2015), Wiliam Knox, Vermilion, Illinois, United States; citing 108, NARA microfilm publication M19, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 23; FHL microfilm 7,648.
This seems to be the only William Knox in Ohio 1830 census of the expected age: "United States Census, 1830," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHGK-3MM : accessed 4 November 2015), William Knox, Marietta Ward 2, Washington, Ohio, United States; citing 381, NARA microfilm publication M19, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 141; FHL microfilm 337,952.
