Biography

Isabella was born in 1827. She was the daughter of James Knox and Elizabeth Unknown. She passed away in 1874.

Isabella Jane born 02/12/1827 and baptised 22/04/1828

The 1871 Canadian Census shows firstborn Isabella Jane as being born in Co Monaghan. It seems to have been common practice that as a child's birth approached the expectant mother would either move in with relatives or have a female relative come to her to give support or assistance during the birthing process. In 1834 in the centre of Co Monaghan was the parish of Tallycorbet home to eight Knox farmers one of whom was Joseph Knox in the townland of Shanmullagh. Could this be the Joseph Knox who in 1803 farmed in the townland of Movarran? Between 1858-1860 there were eleven Knox households in the same location. First born Isabella (aged 19) married Arthur Armstrong (28) (1819-1909) on 5 August 1847. He was the son of Robert Armstrong who held tenure on an adjacent farm. Their children, all born in Ireland, were Robert (1849), John (7 March 1851), James ( Jan,1854), Eliza(beth) Margaret (7 May 1857) and Mary Anne (31 March 1860). This family migrated to Canada in 1860 and lived on a farm near Mount Forest in the district of Wellington North, Ontario where two more children, Ellen (1864) and Isabella (1869) were born. Their mother Isabella died on 19 July1874 while Eliza(beth) Margaret had died earlier as she was not included among the family in the 1871 Canadian Census. Arthur Armstrong died on 12 November 1909 while still living in the Wellington area.
