Samuel Knuckey was born in 26 Apr 1843 in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
He was born the third son and seventh child one month after his parents Nicholas, wife Zenobia and children Mary Jane, Nicholas, Margaret, Oliver and Elizabeth arrived in New Plymouth on the Ship Essex in Sept 1842, arriving in New Plymouth Jan 1843.
The Knuckeys made a home near the Te Henui River, with Sam working on the farm when he was older. Sam was 17 when the Land Wars started. He joined the Armed forces, serving in No 2 Company of the legendary Bush Rangers. Land was allocated to those who served during the Land War period and in 1867 he was allocated 50 acres at Huirangi. Samuel married Ellen Cock 19 Nov. 1867 in New Zealand.[1]
He died 18 May 1923 aged 80 years old in Taranaki, New Zealand.
