Biography

Birth & Early Life in Wisconsin

Anna Kohl was born on November 18, 1865 in the St. Lawrence area of Washington County, WI. She was baptized on November 21, 1865 at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Hartford Township, Washington County, WI. Her sponsors were Anna [illegible] and Maria Holdbrant.[1]

Anna's parents were John Wolfe Kohl and Katharina (or Kate) Dettenthaler. John Wolfe was 19 years old, and Katharina was 18. They were married on November 6, 1865, just 12 days before Anna was born.[2] [3] This indicates it was likely a "shotgun" marriage. The marriage wasn't successful because we know her father John Wolfe left the area and moved to St. Louis, MO where he married and started a new family.

Grew up in Oregon

What appears to have happened, is that Anna's grandparents (Ferdinand and Lena) moved from Wisconsin to Portland Oregon, probably in 1876. With them went a few of their children that included Anna and her mother Kate, and her Aunt Barbara who was married to William J. Hackett. This means that Anna grew up from the age of 10 or 11 in Portland OR.

Married Life

Anna Kohl married William Wiley on December 23, 1883. She was 18 years old. Her mother married again, to a Dane (Danish man) Christen Hansen, and Anna got at least two half sisters: Minnie and Elsie Hansen. We learn this from the following excerpt from An Illustrated History of Klickitat, Yakima and Kittitas Counties: With an outline of the early History of the State of Washington:[4] on page 593, upper right column.

WILLIAM WILEY, dairyman and hop grower, living seven miles west and two miles south of North Yakima, was born in Minnesota, July 15, 1859. He is a pioneer of 1867, and has grown up with the country since a lad of eight years. His father, Hugh Wiley, was born in Pennsylvania in 1831, and was one of the early settlers in Minnesota. In 1865 he moved with his family to the Pacific coast, going via the Isthmus to San Francisco; thence to Salem, Oregon. In 1867 they came to the Ahtanum valley, and took a homestead, where he engaged in farming until his death in 1883. Mary (Tufft) Wiley, the mother, was born in Canada in 1840. Her father was John, and mother, Isabella (Crawford) Tufft, and they came from Ireland. She now lives in the Ahtanum valley.
Our subject remained at home with his parents until twenty-one, working on the farm and attending school. He then began working out for wages, and at the end of four years purchased the farm where he now lives. It was a raw tract and he has made his home from the foundation up, bringing it to a high state of cultivation, with good house and one of the largest, most convenient barns in the valley. He was married in the Ahtanum valley December 23, 1883, to Miss Anna Cole [Kohl], a native of Wisconsin, where she was born in 1865. She was educated in Portland, Oregon. Her mother, Kate (Dittendollar) Cole, was a native of Wisconsin. Mrs. Wiley has two sisters: Minnie and Elsie Hansen, living in Portland. To the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley have been born three children, as follows: Mrs. Vera May McDonald, Ernest and Howard, all living in the Ahtanum valley. They are members of the Congregational church. Politically, Mr. Wiley is a Republican, and fraternally, he affiliates with the Modern Woodmen of America. He is an enterprising farmer, and is engaged extensively in hop raising, dairying and stock raising, making a specialty of the Holstein breed of cattle, of which he has some fine specimens.

The 1880 Census finds Anna living in the home of her grandparents in Fulton, Oregon. Household members included:[5]

  • F Deckenthaler Self M 68 Germany
  • Maydat Deckenthaler Wife F 53 Germany
  • John Deckenthaler Son M 17 Wisconsin, United States
  • Anna Cole [Kohl] Goddaughter [granddaughter] F 16 Wisconsin, United States

On December 22, 1883, Anna Kohl and William Wiley were marred in Yakima, Washington.[6]

The 1900 Census finds Anna married to William Wiley. The record shows that they were married for 15 years. Anna had 3 children all of whom were living. William was a farmer. Members of the household included:[7]

  • William Wiley Head M 41, (July 1859), Minnesota
  • Annie Wiley Wife F 35, (Nov 1865), Wisconsin
  • Vera Wiley Daughter F 15, (Dec 1885), Washington
  • Ernest Wiley Son M 10, (July 1890), Washington
  • Howard Wiley Son M 7, (June 1893), Washington
  • John Gribling Boarder M 19 Illinois

The 1910 Census finds them in the same place, Yakima Washington.[8]

  • William Wiley Head M 51 Minnesota
  • Annie Wiley Wife F 41 Wisconsin
  • Ernest Wiley Son M 19 Washington
  • Howard Wiley Son M 15 Washington
  • Peter P Berg Laborer M 62 Denmark
  • Gladis I Mcdonald Granddaughter F 6, (1903) , Washington

The 1910 Census for her mother Kate Hansen, living in Portland, OR shows that she had 5 children, all of whom were living. So Annie would have had a total of 4 half-siblings.[9]

In the 1913 North Yakima City Directory, we find Annie at 101 North 3rd Street.[10]

Re-marriage

Anna must have divorced William Wiley before 1913 because there is a marriage record for her on the website GenealogyTrails.com from St. Michael's Church in Yakima County Washington. Annie Wiley (born in Wisconsin) married Albert Weston, age 40, born in Wisconsin, on October 1, 1913. Alfred Lockwood, MG (pastor?). Witnesses included Annie's two sons: Ernest L R and Howard Wiley.[11]

This is reinforced by the fact that William shows up in the next Census for 1920 marred to Sadie [Fox], and has a stepson in his household named Richard Fox.[12]

The 1920 Census shows Annie married to Albert Weston in Yakima, WA. They lived at 101 N. 3rd Street. Albert was a plumber who owned his own home free and clear. He was 19 years younger than she. His father was from Maine, and his mother from Illinois. The household included:[13]

  • Albert Weston Head M 47 Wisconsin
  • Anna Weston Wife F 66 Wisconsin
  • Gladys McDonald Granddaughter F 16 Wisconsin, student at business college.

We have not found her in the 1930 or 1940 Census.

Death and Burial

Anna died at the age of 73 years, 8 months, and 27 days on August 13, 1938. Her death certificate mentions her mother as Kate Hansen. She died in Yakima County, WA.[14] [15]

She was buried at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima, WA, in Block 3, Section 10. on findagrave.com there is a reference to her daughter being Vera May Wiley Persons (1887 - 1942).[16]

Her maiden name Dietenthaler appears in records with various mis-spellings that include Tetenthal, Diettenthaler, Ditenthaler, Dettendollar, Deckenthaler, and Dettenthaler.

Her grandparents are Ferdinand (Frederick) and Maria Magdalena (Jessberger) Dettenthaler (Also spelled Dittenthaler and Dittentholer). Maria Magdalena went by Lena.

I'm a direct descendent of John Henry Dittentholer - youngest child of Ferdinand and Lena Dittentholer. Half the children of Ferdinand and Lena spelled the last name as Dittenthaler, while the other half spelled it Dittentholer.
