Biography

Volga German
Johannes Kohler is a Volga German.
Johannes Kohler has German Roots.

Family #34 in the 1775 Grimm census.
Family #61 in the 1798 Grimm census.
Family #272 in the 1834 Grimm census.

1775 Grimm Census [1]

Family # 34
Head of the Household Johannes Kohler, age 35
Wife Maria Barbara Kohler, age 44
Child #1 Johann Kohler, age 3 years 6 months

1798 Grimm Census [2]

Family # 61
Head of the Household Johannes Kohler, age 57
Wife Anna Maria Kaiser Kohler, age 69, second wife
Child #1 Johannes Kohler, age 28
Wife of Child #1 Anna Katharina Bleichroth, age 20
Grandchild #1 Johann Georg Kohler, age 1

It appears that his surname was misspelled in the 1834 census: Kohl instead of Kohler. I checked the 1857 census to see how the name was spelled there, so I could determine if it was a simple spelling error or if the evolution of the name triggered dropping the last two letters and making it Kohl. The surname is not listed there, spelled in either way.

1834 Grimm Census [3]

Family # 272
Head of the Household Johannes Kohl [sic], age 60
Wife Anna Margaretha Kohl [sic], age 59
Child #1 Johann Michael Kohl, age 31
Wife of Child #1 Elisabeth Katharina Kohl, age 28
Grandchild #1 Johann Nicholas Kohl, age 8
Grandchild #2 Johann Konrad Kohl, age 5
Grandchild #3 Georg Jakob Kohl, age 3
Grandchild #4 Heinrich Jakob Kohl, age 1 year 3 months
Child #2 Johann Nicholas Kohl, age 26
Wife of Child #2 Maria Barbara Kohl, age 24
Grandchild #5 Katharina Elisabeth Kohl, age 4
Grandchild #6 Elisabeth Barbara Kohl, age 2
Grandchild #7 Georg Philipp Kohl, age 6 weeks
Child #3 Johann Jakob Kohl, age 22
Child #4 Ernest Friedrich Kohl, age 20

The Kohl family cannot be found in the 1857 Grimm census. There were four sons, five grandsons and two granddaughters, so they should have been represented in the 1857 census. The only explanation is that they moved to another colony, perhaps a daughter colony. If the entire family moved together before 1850, it would explain why there is no entry for any of them in the 1857 census. The departure of the male family members would have been noted in the 1850 male-only census.
