Biography

Mr. George Edward Kolar, 87, of La Porte, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at 1:45 a.m. at his home.

He was born July 20, 1920, in Cicero, Ill., to Frank and Marie (Karel) Kolar, and lived in La Porte most of his life, coming from Cicero.

Mr. Kolar worked for Lighthouse Electrical Supply Co. as an electrician, where he was referred to as the "lamp doctor." He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, where he was an usher. He helped build Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Kingsford Heights. He did the electrical work for the Eason Chapel in Pine Lake Cemetery on a voluntary basis. He was also involved in the Rumely Historic Apartments renovation project and was a former YMCA member. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a loving and gentle husband, father and grandfather, always helpful to all his friends. He enjoyed traveling, gardening and sailing.

On July 5, 1947, in La Porte, he married Winifred R. Dreiner, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Joan M. (Robert) Pisto of Comox, British Columbia, Canada, and Lynn A. of La Porte; four sons, David J. of La Porte, Michael D. (Helen) of Naperville, Ill., Timothy J. of Hudson Lake, and Jan E. (Judy) of Scranton, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, John of La Porte.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Mary Kolar, Ann Richter, Elizabeth Moriarity and Josephine Tracik; and two brothers, James Sr. and Frank Jr.

A funeral Mass will be Thursday, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, La Porte, with Rev. Joseph Angotti officiating. Friends may call at Essling Funeral Home, La Porte, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 4 p.m.; and Thursday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph A. Angotti officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Essling Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
