Biography

J. H. Franz Kolb was born 25 Mar 1775 in Kapfelberg, Kelheim, Bavaria, in House #48. He owned and worked a "1/16 farm," 3-4 small fields that would take about two days to harvest, and a Tageloner, or day laborer, presumably working in a quarry to supplement his income. He was a Roman Catholic, and all information that follows, unless noted comes from parish records.[1] Josef H. Kolb married Franziska Karl on 12 Aug 1801 in Kapfelberg, Bavaria. Franziska Karl was also from Kapfelberg, the daughter of Georg Karl and Anna Maria Rott. The couple had three children: Peter (4 Sep 1802-16 Sep 1802), Johann George (3 Mar 1808-17 May 1808) who died as infants. The second son, Joseph, was born 5 Oct 1803 and apparently survived into adulthood. Franziska Karl died died before 1813 in Kapfelberg. Josef H. Kolb and Magdalena Clas were married on 11 May 1813 in Kapfelberg, Bavaria, Germany. Maria apparently bore no children and died around August of 1816. Wasting no time, Josef H. Kolb and Therese Redlbeck were married on 15 Oct 1816 in Kapfelberg, Bavaria, Germany. Therese Redlbeck was the daughter of Sebastian Redlbeck and Anastasia Karl). She was born in 1786 in Poikam, Bavaria—just down the Danube from Kapfelberg. [2] She is described as a hauslerstochter—daughter of a hausler, a contract farm worker who receives a house and small plot of land on the farm in return for labor and an annual fee, i.e., an unlanded peasant. Josef H. Kolb and Therese Redlbeck had four children: Franz Kolb, born 5 Oct 1817 and then disappearing; Peter Kolb, born 14 Oct 1819 and living in Kapfelberg until his death in 29 May 1866, marrying Agnes Beer on 14 Jul 1851; Jakob Josef Kolb, born 24 Jul 1821 in Kapfelberg and later emigrating to Beaver Dam in Wisconsin in the United States; Anna Marie Kolb, born on 30 Aug 1825 and later marrying Johann Luft. Therese died on 12 Mar 1851 in Kapfelberg. Joseph H. Kolb died on 22 May 1829 in Kapfelberg. Family stories indicate that he was killed in a stone quarry accident. [3]
