Sofie Konicek immigrated to America in 1871. She traveled aboard the "SS Berlin", departing from Bremen, Germany and arriving in Baltimore, Maryland possibly on 20 Jul 1871,[6] but more likely on 26 Jun 1871.[7][8] Sofie, aged 22, traveled with the Konicek family (recorded as "Honicek") of eleven, which included her parents, Josef 45 and Helene 43; and siblings, Helene 20, Josef 18, Johann 17, Anna 15, Magdalena 13, Franz 9, Wenzl 4, and Tobias (baby, under age 1).[8][9]
The family left Baltimore, setting out for the midwest with no destination in mind. They settled first in Quarry, Marshall County, Iowa,[5] residing there for three years, until they had the money to purchase their first 80 acre parcel of land in York Township, Tama County, Iowa, on which they built their homestead.[9]
Sophia married Vencil (aka James) Rayman[9] (1846–1913) either in 1868[10] or about 1871.[11] After their marriage, they settled on a farm in York Township, Tama County, Iowa where they raised their large family.[2] Sophie and Vencil Rayman had the following children:[2]
Sophie Rayman (aka Rejman, Rejmann, Reyman, Ryman, Raymen) was enumerated in the records of the United States Census and the Iowa State Census as follows:
1880 United States Census: the Vencil Rayman household residing in York Township, Tama County, Iowa included Vencil 35, Josephine [Sophie] 30, Vencil 7, Josephine 6, Joseph 5, Frank 3, John 1 and laborer, Joseph Zrzan 50.[13]
1885 Iowa State Census: the Vaclav Rejman household residing in York Twp., Tama, Iowa included Vaclav 38, Zofie 34, Vaclav 11, Joseph 9, Frank 7, John 6, Marie 4, and Zofie 2.[14]
1895 Iowa State Census: the Vencil Rejmann household residing in York Twp., Tama, Iowa, included Vencil 49, Zofie 46, Venel 22, Joseph 19, Frank 18, John 16, Mary 14, Zofie 11, Libie 8, and Peter 6.[15]
1900 United States Census: the Vencel Ryman household residing in York Twp., (town of Elberon), Tama, Iowa included Vencel 53, Sophie 50, John 21, Mary 19, Libbie 13, and Peter 11.[11]
1910 United States Census: the Venal Kaymen [Rayman] household residing in Otter Creek, Tama, Iowa included Vencil 64 and Sophia 60.[16]
1920 United States Census: Sophie lived with her son, John Rayman, and his family in York Twp., Tama, Iowa. Their household included John 41, his wife Mary 32, and Sophia 70 (widow).[17]
Sophia Rejman/Zofie Rayman died on 4 Dec 1921[3] in Vining, Tama County, Iowa, aged 71 years, 11 months, 14 days.[1] She was buried at National Cemetery in Vining, Tama County, Iowa.[1][2][3]
