Early Years

Elisabetha (König) Schipp has German Roots.
Elisabetha (König) Schipp has roots in the region now known as Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

Elisabetha König was born about 1784, in or near Gau-Algesheim. Today, Gau-Algesheim is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the left bank of the Rhine River but in 1784 it was a Lower Archbishopric, part of the Prince-Archbishopric and Electorate of Mainz (German: Kurmainz), part of the Holy Roman Empire.[1] From 1797 to 1815, Gau-Algesheim, along with the whole of the territory on the Rhine's left bank, belonged to the French Republic or the Napoleonic Empire.[2]

She was the daughter of Johannis König, a gardener, and Elisabetha Ditt (or Dotti), both from Gau-Algesheim.[3][4][5][6] One researcher shows her DOB as 05 AUG 1784. However, this is unsourced.[7] She was baptised in one of the Catholic churches in Gau-Algesheim on 5 Sep 1784.[4][3]

Marriage

Flag of Duchy of Nassau 1806-1866 Herzogtum Nassau
Elisabetha Schipp (nee König) spent her adult life in Herzogtum Nassau

She married Christian Schipp , a burgher and day labourer in in the nearby village of Eltville, on 2 Jan 1817. The couple were married in the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul [German: Die katholische Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul] in Eltville.[4][8][9]

Eltville (from Alta Villa, Latin for "high estate, high town", corrupted to Eldeville, Elfeld and later Eltville), located on the right bank of the Rhine River, is now a town in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. However, at the time of their marriage, it sat in the Duchy of Nassau which was an independent state between 1806 and 1866. Then as now, Eltville was a major wine producing centre.

After their marriage, the couple remained in Eltville where they had five sons and a daughter. Their first son, Martin, probably passed away at an early age given the couple named another son Martin three years later.

All of their children were baptised in the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Eltville.

Their son Martin emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales with his wife and children on the Reiherstieg in 1852.

Her husband Christian died on 25 November 1860 and was buried in Eltville three days later. [17]

Elisabetha apparently remained in Eltville after his death. She may have lived with her daughter Catherine who remained in Germany.

Death

Elisabetha died on 12 NOV 1864 in Eltville aged about 80 years and was buried three days later in Eltville.[6][18]
