Biography

Ewa was born December 21, 1867 in Huta Komorowska to Jozef Kopeć and Maria Wojtowicz. She was baptized on December 23, 1867.

Ewa was the oldest of 5 full siblings. When she was 9 years old, her father died and both her full brothers would not live to adulthood. Her mother remarried when she was 16.

At age 22, she married Maciej Wąsik in nearby Brzostowa Góra. They then moved to Trześń, across the river from Sandomierz. There they had Lawrence (Wawrzyniec), Mary (Marianna), Minnie (Michalina), Frank (Franciszek). She would later have 3 more children, John, Thomas and Steven, in the US.

Her husband left in 1903 to immigrate to the US, and she and the children followed in 1904. They left Antwerp, Belgium on the SS Lake Michigan in November 1904 and arrived at the port of St John, New Brunswick, Canada on December 15, 1904. They then went by train to Minneapolis.

The family originally lived in Mounds View but later moved to 2318 4th St NE. By 1917, Eva and Mathew and their youngest children are living in Strickland, Rusk County, Wisconsin.

Misfortune struck the family and their son John died in a horrific automobile accident in Strickland in 1924 and Eva's mom, who had immigrated in 1913, died in 1925. By 1927, the family is living back in Minneapolis but Mathew and Eva would live in separate households for the rest of their lives. Eva went to live with their daughter, Minnie Pappas, who had married Peter Pappas.

Eva died on her birthday December 21, 1942 at the age of 74 in Minneapolis. She is buried separately from her husband at St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
