Karl Albert was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1889. He was the oldest son (and first child born in the US) of Karl and Emma Kraft, who had immigrated (about 4 years prior per the 1900 census) from East Prussia, Germany (today Poland) . By the time of the 1900 census, he and his family had moved to Grove, Nebraska, where his father, Karl, was a farmer.
He married Metta Sophie Lampe on 24 Nov 1909 at the age of 20 in Pierre, South Dakota, where he was working as a railroad brakeman. His route took him between Tracy, Minnesota and Huron, South Dakota. They lived in South Dakota for a few years, then moved back to Nebraska, where he worked as a carpenter. They had six children in 12 years. He died in Tilden, Nebraska at the age of 45.
