Biography

The ancestors of Grable (and several other spellings) have been sought by many researchers. The family is example of emigration from Switzerland to the German Palatinate, to America. A brief yet beautiful rendition of that history is given at Geni.com

The researched ancestral line is also shown at: A McGowan-Hall Family Tree There, Jacob is shown as born in 1693 and died 1791. For purposes of this profile, the birth date of Jacob is shown as about 1700, so that failures in sourcing regulation might draw fewer flags.

Jacob, this profile, is listed among the children of Michael Krehbiel, who was born in 1667 and died 1752.

Research Notes

He is included among the "Emigrants from Weierhof" in Rhineland Emigrants, Lists of German Settlers in Colonial America, edited by Don Yoder, as follows:

"EMIGRANTS FROM WEIERHOF1

...

13. A property transfer of Anna, widow of Michel Grebühl of Weierhof, dated October 25, 1752, names among her sons a Jakob Krehbühl as being in Pennsylvania. He is possibly the Jakob Crebil who landed at Phladelphia on the Ship Mortonhouse, August 17, 1729 (Strassburger-Hinke, List 9 A-C). Additional material has been published on him in the Nordpfalzer Geschichtsverein, XXXIV (1954)."

1 Weierhof, near Kircheim-Bolanden, is an important Palatine Mennonite center. Originally a monastery estate, it was given in hereditary lease in 1682 to Peter Crayenbühl (Krehbiel) under the elector of the Palatinate. According to the lease the lessee and his family were granted the privilege of holding Mennonite worship within the family, but without the right to establish a congregation. In 1706 the area came under the jurisdiction of Nassau-Weilburg and the congregation, which drew together Mennonites from the villages and estates of the area, took on formal character at that time. For the history of the settlement, see Christian G. Neff, "Weierhof," in The Mennonite Encyclopedia, IV, 911-93. For a brief history of the Krehbiel (Graybill) family, originally from Grosshochstetten in Canton Bern, Switzerland, see The Mennonite Encyclopedia, III, 235-348. ---- EDITOR." [1]

There are other entries for people named Krebuhl (and similar) in the same source, including:

Peter Krebuhl, son of Johannes from Weierhof who went to the "New Land" in 1735 (on p. 82);

John Graybill, preacher in Juniata County (Mennonite Quarterly Review XVIII [July 1944] 155), (p. 131);

Hans Erick Crable and Michael Krebiel, on the Molly, September 30, 1727 (p. 131); and

Christian Crybile, on the Friendship of Bristoll, October 16, 1727 (p. 131).
