The Krom-van Meteren Extended Family

Though now well understood, this extended family is slowly recovering from former misunderstandings, yet confusion persists. Details will follow, but briefly, this family lived in Gelderland along the Waal River between Zaltbommel and Tiel. In 1645, Maycken Hendrickse van den Oever married 1st Willem Gijsbertse Krom. About 12 years later, he died and she married 2nd Jan Joosten van Meteren. In 1662, Jan and Maycken immigrated to New Netherland with her infant son by Jan Joosten, and her four older Krom children.

Biography of Willem Gijsbertse Krom

Family

Excerpt from image of Church Records
Waardenburg, Gelderland, Dutch Reformed Congregation, Marriages 1619–1747[1]

Willem Gijsbertse Krom and Maeijken Hendrickse van den Oever had four children who survived their father and immigrated to New Netherland with their mother and step-father: Lysbet, Catherine, Gysbert and Geertje.

Death

No record has been found of his death, but it probably occurred in or around Waardenburg between 1655 and 1658.

Genealogical Errors

New Understandings

The family of Jan Joosten and Maycken Hendricks has been misunderstood until recently. Jan and Maycken immigrated to New Netherland in 1662 with 5 children aged 15, 12, 9, 6 and 2½. Their 1681 joint testamentary disposition named their children: Joost (the primary heir), Gysbert, Geertie Crom and Lysbeth (deceased). These records led to the beliefs that Joost Jans was their eldest child born c.1647 (aged 15 in 1662), Jan and Maycken were married c.1645, and Jan Joosten was born c.1625. Research into the Krom family has largely overturned these views. Maycken Hendricks ven den Oever married her 1st husband, Willem Gijsberts Krom, on 7 Apr 1645 at Waardenburg, Gelderland. Following his death she married Jan Joosten van Meteren, as her 2nd husband, c.1657 or a little earlier. Jan Joosten could have been born much later than c.1625. Of the 5 children aged 15, 12, 9, 6 and 2½ who immigrated with Jan and Maycken, the elder ones were Kroms, step-children of Jan Joosten, and the younger one or two children were Jan's. Joost Jans was the primary heir in the 1681 joint testamentary disposition, not because he was the eldest son, but rather because he was Jan Joosten's only biological son. There are still many open questions about this family, including the identity of each of the 5 children. Lysbeth, Gysbert and Geertje Krom were certainly among the elder 3 or 4 children. Joost Jans was certainly the youngest or 2nd youngest child. Catherin was probably the 5th child. Further detail can be found at Fine Lineage, V-3, Maycken Hendricks and V-4, Their Children.

Children

In addition to the five children of Maycken Hendricks who immigrated to New Netherland in 1662 with her and her 2nd husband, Jan Joosten, four other children have been attributed to her in error. Floris Willems Krom; Maritje/Maria Willems Krom; Hendrick Krom, who doesn't appear to have ever existed; and Jannetje/Jane (Van Meteren) Hendrick. For particulars, see their profiles.
