Wilhelm Carl August Rudolph Krueger, the son of Wilhelm Krueger and Auguste Ringe, was born 18 Oct 1872 and baptized on 3 Nov 1872 at St. Nikolai, an evangelical Lutheran church in Stettin Stadt, a city on the Oder River in Pomerania, then a province of Prussia.[1]
Early Life
Rudolph was raised by his grandparents and an aunt and an uncle, on his mother's side, one of which was possibly named Leopold.[2] His grandparents owned the farm they worked on.[2] The farm may have later been deeded to a son, possibly named Leopold.[2]
Rudolph started working in the fields as soon as he could walk behind a plow. He only went to school occasionally.[2] Rudolph stayed with his grandparents and aunt and uncle until he was almost 20.[2] Rudolph then left to serve his apprenticeship as a carpenter.[2] During his apprenticeship, he lived with his mother who died of a stroke in 1907.[2]
Marriage and Family Life
On 25 Mar 1900, at the Evangelical Lutheran church in Pudewitz, Kries Posen Ost, Prussia (in German) or Pobiedziska, poznański (in Polish), Rudolph married Juliana Schultz, daughter of Julianna von Niedervier and Wilhelm Fryderyk Schulz.[2][3] Rudolph and Julia had six children:
George Krueger was born 26 Mar 1916 in Toledo, Ohio and baptized 14 May 1916 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio[3][7]
Immigration
In the summer of 1911, Rudolph, his wife Julia, his daughter Agnes and his daughter Frieda left Segenshof, traveled to Bremen, boarded the ship Rhein which sailed from Bremen to Baltimore and then traveled on to Defiance, Ohio[8] where they joined Rudolph's sister Emilie Marie Krueger who was married to John Gottlieb Brandt.[3] The family lived for two months with Rudolf's sister and brother-in-law on the River Road in Defiance, Ohio on a pretty farm on a hill facing the Maumee River. Rudolf Krueger got work right away making forms for pouring cement for the Independence Dam. When the work was finished, the family moved to Toledo, Ohio where it would be easier for a carpenter to find work.[2] At one point, he worked as a carpenter for the Henry J. Speaker Co.[2] In Toledo, they lived at 1034 Blum Street.[9][10][11]
Occupation
According to his daughter Agnes, Rudolph was a carpenter.[2] This information is confirmed by the listing of Rudolph's occupation on the ship list at immigration as "carpenter."[8]
Death and Burial
Rudolph Krueger died 1 May 1961 and was buried in Forest Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio.[12]
