Mary Aepli was born in 1861 and was the oldest in her family of eight sisters from Dubuque, Iowa. Her father Rev. Ernst Kudobe was a prominent German speaking Presbyterian minister from Prussia. Mary came with her Swiss born husband Peter Aepli and their growing family to Arizona Territory in 1897 to get benefit for Peter's health from the hot dry climate of the Arizona desert.
