Ferdinand Kuehn was born in 2 March 1841 on Kol. Donnersruh, Prov. Gostynin, Plock, Warsaw, Poland to Michael Kuehn (1806-1876) and Anne Christine Krueger (1814 -1846) who was his second wife. In 1855, 15 year old Ferdinand found his 90 year old Grandfather Michael Andreas Kuehn (1765-1855) dead in the shade of a stook. He had died while taking an afternoon nap. In 1865 Ferdinand married Wilhelmina Schultz 1847-1939 in Plotzk, Poland and lived in Margeneufke. They and other German settlers in Poland moved to Pestonia, Rowna, Volhynia, Russia in about 1870. In 1876 Ferdinand's father, Michael. was kicked in the chest by a horse and died several days later. They were parents to 16 children, some of whom died in the "Old Country" Russia. The rest all came to Canada. Even though Ferdinand had been mayor and a prosperous resident in Pestonie, Volhynia, Russia, in 1903 they left Europe and sailed to Canada aboard the S.S. Lake Champlain and arrived in Quebec City on May 31. They went on to Neche, ND where his ailing step-brother Johann was living. Johann died in August 1903. While in Neche, the Kuehn's celebrated the marriage of son Karl to Amalie Eichhorst and daughter Auguste to Friedrich Klein. In 1904 the Kuehn family moved to Beausejour, Manitoba where some of their children were living. In July 1904 Ferdinand accompanied a group of prospective settlers to the Quill Lake district of Assiniboia, now Saskatchewan, to find a possible homestead site. The winter of 1904-1905 was quite mild with little snow. He liked what he saw in the Esk, SK area. In March 1905 he, his wife and two youngest children, Amalie and Rudolf, moved to their homestead. He led the first Lenten devotions in his home prior to Easter Sunday 23 April 1905. Late summer of 1906 he began having severe stomach pains. By the following spring he could not keep down food and he began to fail rapidly. On Sunday June 16, 1907, family and neighbours gathered for Sunday service. He listened to the hymns he had chosen for the day. On June 20, Ferdinand passed away at his home at the age of 67. His funeral service was held in his home on 26 June 1907. Pastor Pempeit arrived from Rostern to hold the local services and the first being Ferdinand's funeral service. He was the first person to be buried in the Esk Lutheran Cemetery which was a half mile west of his homestead. It was on land donated by Gottleib Klein, father of F. Kuehn's two sons-in-laws. At the time of his death he had 36 descendants, 4 sons, 5 daughters and 27 grandchildren.
The last of Ferdinand's children to immigrate was his oldest daughter, Pauline, who had married Wilhelm Lemke. She arrived later that year (1907) with her husband and children.
