Biography

Obituary: Rabbi Emanuel Max Kumin died April 18, 2002 at the Summit Skilled Nursing Facility. He had been ill since emergency surgery in February. His beloved wife, Mollie passed away three weeks ago. Rabbi Kumin was born in Cleveland, OH in 1911, the youngest of nine children. As a teenager, he went to live in an Orthodox yeshiva in New York to study for the rabbinate. Rabbi Kumin met his wife Mollie in Utica, NY when he became her Hebrew tutor, and they were married for 62 years. After WWII, Rabbi and Mollie lived in Honolulu, where Rabbi Kumin was a chaplain with the Jewish Welfare Board, assigned to Pearl Harbor Navy Base. He was the first rabbi and a founding member of the first synagogue established in Honolulu, Temple Emanu-El. During his time in Hawaii, Rabbi Kumin also assisted in bringing Jewish refugees from Shanghai through Honolulu, and on to Palestine. Rabbi Kumin and Mollie moved to San Antonio in 1950, and he became a leader in the Jewish community of Texas. He served as Rabbi for Congregation Agudas Achim in San Antonio, and then accepted the position of Regional Director of the USO/Jewish Welfare Board. He also served as President of the Texas Kallah of Rabbis. He was beloved and respected in the Jewish community of San Antonio, where he took over the pulpits of the reform, conservative, and orthodox rabbis when they were out of town. He earned his Masters degree in social work from Our Lady of the Lake University. In 1966, Rabbi and Mollie moved to Shreveport, LA, where he was the Executive Director of the Shreveport Jewish Federation. Rabbi and Mollie retired to Austin, in 1985. In retirement, he served the congregation in Midland-Odessa, where a library is now named after him. He also served the congregation of Sherman, TX as High Holiday rabbi. He was active in the Austin Ministerial Association, and was a Shriner, a Rotarian, and a Mason. Rabbi Kumin is survived by his sons, Hillel and wife Elaine of Norman, OK, and Elisha and wife Helene of Austin, TX; by six grandchildren, Matthew Kumin, Michael Kumin, Holley Aune, Deborah Kumin, Avi Kumin and Esther Rothman; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Aune and Alexander Kumin, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Kumin, Seattle, WA.
