Paul Kuster (Conrad, Arnold, Paulus, Arnold) was born in 1730 to Conrad aka Konrad Kuster (1695-1772) and Susanna Kuster (1692-1747) who was probably Susanna Adams based upon the Will of her father Richard Adams of Philadelphia, grandfather to her children and who left a bequeathment to his unnamed Kuster grandchildren. Residencies and Other Miscellaney
On 26 July 1753 Paul "Kuster" purchased 236 acres on Muddy Creek, Augusta county, Virginia. Witnessing the transaction were Francis and Sarah Puicer/Puison/Puiser. [5][1] [6]

In 1762 Paul Kuster, wife Lucinda and their five year old son Jacob made the relocation to the northern part of Augusta [later Rockingham] County, Virginia. [1] Author Custer doesn't include son Richard in his statement who was perhaps mistakenly ommitted but Richard was a later proven resident.

17 March 1772, Augusta County, Virginia, Paul Kuster placed a bond as administrator of noncupative will of Conrad Custer. [7]

10 May 1774 Paul Kuster (Conrad, Arnold, Paulus) bought 160 acres of land at Brock's Gap, Augusta County, in what is now Rockingham County, Virginia from his nephew Conrad Custer (Arnold, Conrad, Arnold, Paulus) [8] :

160 acres purchased from former family owner: 14 November 1763, 160 acres land near Brocks Gap, Augusta [later Rockingham] County which was land inherited by Conrad Custer, eldest son of Arnold Kuster, son of Conrad Kuster.

1810, Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Virginia, United States. [9]
1820, Rockingham, Virginia, United States. [10]

Author Milo Custer states "The name of this ancestor, Paul Kustar, has been traced through the public records of Augusta & Rockingham Counties, Virginia from about 1750 to 1824 (wills & deeds). Three specimens of his signature, all nearly identical, are extant: One on his bond as administrator of the Estate of his father, Conrad Kuster, dated 17 March 1772, at Staunton, Virginia; the others at Harrisonburg, Virginia; one on his consent note for the marriage of his daughter Susannah to the Rev. Ferdinand Lair, 15 Oct 1782, the other on his consent note for the marriage of his daughter Mary to James Beggs, 23 August 1794. Other than this very little appears now to be known of him." [Custer, pg.4B-5]

Death and Will
Paul Kuster passed away in 1820, Rockingham county, Virginia and was buried in the Custer Family Cemetery, Fulks Run, Rockingham, Virginia. [1] [2][11] A memorial stone which can be seen at the grave site was produced generations later and which used the later Americanized spelling of Custer.

It is recorded in the "Custer Family Histories" that Paul left a will of which his son Richard Custer Sr. was made executor.

Research Notes
CAUTION: G4rmantown, Pennsylvania immigrant brothers Arnold Kuster (1680-1739), Hermanus Kuster (1675-1760) and Johannes had 'genealogically nearby' descendants named Paul.

  • Paul Custer (1710-1783) (Arnold, Paulus, Arnold) who married Sarah M. Ball. Residents of Hanover Twp., Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania.
  • Paul Kuster (1730-1820) (Conrad, Arnold, Paulus, Arnold) son of Conrad Kuster, (1685-1771), who married Lucinda Malone. This Profile Resident of Philadelphia, Penn., & Augusta [later Rockingham] Co., Virginia
  • Paul Kuster (1737-1800)(Peter, Hermanus, Paulus, Arnold) who m. ?. Resident Skippack, Montgomery, Penn., d. Perkiomen (near Skippack), Montgomery, Penn.
  • Paulus Kuster (1746--) (Nicholas, Arnold, Paulus, Arnold) who m. Sarah Ball. Resident Limerick, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania

CAUTION: For purposes of consistency with the "Virginia Deeds & Wills" source please do not change his WikiTree profile name to Custer or Custard. In the contemporary records (of his time) his LNAB is spelled the same as his father's surname: Kuster. The Find-A-Grave memorial stone adopted the children's later generational spelling of Custer. This earlier spelling, not change until Paul's children's era is acknowledged in the various early 20th c. published genealogies quoted herein. Thank You for your help.

Caution: Author Milo Custer states "I do not accept the theory of some genealogists that all Custers of American colonial descent are descended from a common emigrant ancestor...The numerous variations in spelling of this family name most likely indicates different origins in extensive areas of western Europe Teutonic countries and opposes the probability of relationship among its first users." [Milo Custer, p.4]

CAUTION: Notable Gen. George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) (Emmanuel, John, Emanuel, Nicholas Kuster, Arnold, Paulus) descends from Arnold Kuster (1669-1738) the son of Paulus Kuster (1643-1708) whereas this profile, Paul Kuster descends from Arnold's brother Conrad, son of Paulus.

information posted on Conrad's profile speculates marriage with Susanna Addams, oldest child of Richard and Gertien (op den Graeff) Adams, occurred around 1714.

I re-attached this Paul as Lucinda's husband, based on information in Find a Grave (and trust in De Coursey's gedcom), I think that he (Paul, son of Conrad) is more likely the husband than Paul Jr. (Conrad-410). I also think it's possible that Paul Jr.'s father was not named Paul - at the time, "Jr." was used to differentiate a younger man with the same name as another local resident, regardless of relationship.

I know that this reply is to a 2016 post, but I was on this profile to correct something that I was advised of in the weekly Wikitree notice. You posted above "and trust in De Coursey's gedcom". The 2010 "124-DeCoursey.ged" GEDcom dump was a bad one, and we all have been cleaning up after it even after all these years (now 2022). I remember that there was even a special week for either Data Doctors or another group, for us to just work on the DeCoursey.ged clean up. So I hope you have not based any of your work on the "124-DeCoursey.ged" GEDcom. If you go into G2G forum you should be able to find many a posting about it, unless they get purged after a few years, not sure, but I think all the G2G postings remain forever. Just throwing this out there for anyone that was not a Wikitree member during that time.

Thank you for your concern. I was made aware of the problem with that gedcom when https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:124-DeCoursey_ged was created in 2017 & have done some corrective work on DeCoursey profiles over the years since. I had forgotten about this post. If you have a more reliable source than FindAGrave, please add it!
