Margarete Ilse Köhler was born September 22, 1906 in Dresden, Saxony, German Empire. She was a daughter of Eduard Emil Max Köhler and Anna Clara Florentine Kubisch.
She married Karl-Otto Koch.
Köhler became one of the first prominent Nazis tried by the U.S. military.
She was known as "The Witch of Buchenwald" (Die Hexe von Buchenwald) by the inmates because of her cruelty and lasciviousness toward prisoners. In English, she was referred to as: "The Beast of Buchenwald", "Queen of Buchenwald", "Red Witch of Buchenwald", "Butcher Widow",and, more commonly, "The Bitch of Buchenwald".
Koch died by suicide at Aichach women's prison on 1 September 1967. She was buried at Alter Friedhof Aichach in Aichach, Landkreis Aichach-Friedberg, Bavaria (Bayern), Germany.
