Biography

Johanne Christiane Sophia (König) Friebel has German Roots.

Johanne Christiane Sophia was born 31 Jan 1834 to the household of Gottfried Daniel Gotlieb Friebel and Johanne Louise König in Apollensdorf, Germany , a village just outside of Wittenberg in Germany.[1] Her father was not named in the father column of baptism record so she may have been listed as Johanne Christiane Sophia König at the time since her mother is listed as Johanne Louisa, daughter of Christian König. However there was a marginal note added to some registers referring to an entry for her eldest brother Friedrich Wilhelm's baptism in 1827.[2] That margin note is roughly translated as:

On November 21st Friedrich[sic] Friebel, day laborer, comes to me and asked me to write down at this birth record that he is the father of this child. He is a subject of Anhalt-Bernburg and is still in draft service of the Anhalt-Bernburg govt.

There is a second note written in the margin note area of Johanne Christiane Sophia's baptism record which I have been unable to translate, but it clearly mentions Gottfried Daniel Gotlieb Friebel. It's unclear if the children personally used the surname König or Friebel; they did use Friebel when they married, but this was after their parents had married.

Because of 18th and 19th century marriage laws in Prussia intended to limit populations growth among the lower classes, couples had to meet certain financial requirements before being allowed to marry.[3][4] This was difficult for the majority of the lower laborer class to do and what resulted was an increase in illegitimate births. From all appearances Gottfried Daniel Gotlieb Friebel and Johanne Louise König were in a committed long term relationship, yet all of their children were baptized illegitimate with only a vague mention of Friebel by name in the first borns baptism and then a reference to that entry for the additional children. All of the children were legitimized 1 Dec 1853 when Gottfried Daniel Gotlieb Friebel and Johanne Louise König were finally allowed to marry.[5]

Johanne Christiane Sophia married Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm Pflugk, the son of Johann Gottfried Pflugk on 24 Jan 1858 in Apollensdorf.[6][7]
