Biography

Onofrio Lalla (usually spelled "l'Ala") is born in Terra Reffaudali (Raffadali, in Agrigento province), the son of Maestro Gerlando and Antonina Lalla. His mother's surname is not yet confirmed, although his sister's marriage record calls her "Curto." I estimate Onofrio is born around 1726, twenty years before he marries.

According to his marriage record, Onofrio has lived in Corleone since the age of minority. He has two brothers born in Raffadali who also come to Corleone as children and marry there. They have a sister who is born in Corleone and marries there.

Maestro Onofrio marries Brigitta lo Curto on 9 January 1746 in Corleone. His father is living, and his mother has died by this time.

Onofrio and Brigitta have at least seven children: Antonina (c. 1745), Luciano (c. 1747), Gerlando (c. 1750), Giuseppa (c. 1753), Francesca (c. 1754), Carmela (c. 1757), and Michaele (c. 1759).

Antonina is born around 1745, based on her age in 1765.

Luciano is born around 1747, based on his age in 1765.

Gerlando, also called "Gerardo," is named after his paternal grandfather. Based on his age in 1765, he is born around 1750.

Giuseppa is born around 1753, based on her age in 1765.

Francesca is born around 1754, based on her age in 1765.

Carmela is born around 1757, based on her age in 1765.

Michaele is known from the 1765 census. Based on his given age at this time, he is born around 1759.

Antonina marries Maestro Onofrio Salpietro on 29 November 1766. Maestro Onofrio has died by this time.

In the 1765 census (the census date has been estimated based on the families on which it reports), Onofrio's widow, Brigitta l'Ala, 57 (b. 1708), lives on the strada di San Leoluca with their children Luciano, 18 (b. 1747), Gerlando, 15 (b. 1750), Francesca, 11 (b. 1754), Carmela, 8 (b. 1757), Giuseppa, 12 (b. 1753), and Michaele, 6 (b. 1759). They live with Brigitta's son-in-law Maestro Onofrio Salpetro, 23, and his wife, Brigitta and Onofrio's daughter Antonina, 20 (b. 1745).

Giuseppa marries Maestro Bernardo Inserra on 23 July 1776.

Maestro Luciano L'Ala marries Serafina Nicolosi on 10 November 1779.

Brigitta dies, reportedly at 72 (b. 1716) or even 92 years of age, on 26 January 1788.[1] I estimate Brigitta is about 67 years old when she dies.

Maestro Gerardo marries Giuseppa Santoro on 18 August 1788.

Francesca marries Gioachino di Gregorio on 4 June 1795.

In 1811, Francesca, age 53 (b. 1758), is a widow, living with her daughter and her unmarried sister, Carmela, age 55 (b. 1756). They live in the strada di Sarzana, next door to their brother, Maestro Gerlando, his wife, and seven of his children.

Carmela dies, unmarried, reportedly at age 55 (b. 1767) on 23 April 1822.

Maestro Gerlando dies at age 76 (b. 1753) on 1 August 1829, the widower of Giuseppa.

Giuseppa dies at age 82 (b. 1751) on 12 March 1833, the widow of Bernardo.
