Biography

Francoise L'Orange was the daughter of Frances (Rivers) L'Orange, and the granddaughter of the French Huguenot Claud Rivers, who emigrated to America via England, with a group that settled in Manakin Town, on the James River in Virginia. (Claud(e) Rivers remembered Anne Souille, a daughter of Nicholas and Francoise, in his Will)

Frances L'Orange Souillie was married three times, and survived three husbands, as was evidenced by the transactions on a land deed that remained in her possession, on February 20, 1738. She was the widow of Nicholas Souille in 1738, having been the widow of Daniel Guerrant, Jr., after this tract of Parenteau's was deeded to Guerrant in 1728. Prior to August 1738, Frances had married for the third time, her new husband Samuel Weaver, who predeceased her. (his Will written in 1763 was probated in 1769. [1]

Children of Francoise and Daniel Guerrant, Jr include:

  • Daniel Guerrant, III, born August 18, 1721, died circa 1750
  • Peter Guerrant, born 1725
  • Dilcy Guerrant, born 1726
  • Francois Guerrant, born October 12, 1728, in Mankin, Goochland, Virginia, died after April 17, 1800 in Buckingham county, Virginia, married Charles Perault (1728-1797)

Francoise married, secondly Nicholas Souille, born circa 1696, in France. Between 1700 and 1701, Nicholas immigrated with his parents and one sister, to Old King William Parish, Virginia, where he had become eligible as a "tithable" in 1711[2] He was listed thereafter with regularity through 1735, the year he died. The following year "The Widow Souille and her tithables" were recorded.

  • 19th June, 1735, was born Nanni Soulié, daughter of Nicolas Soulié and Francoise Soulié, his wife; had for godfather, the father of the child; for godmother, the mother and Ann gining [sic] [3] Nanni was only a few months old when her father died.

Researchers Notes

Last Name at Birth

L'Orange because Jean L'Orange and his wife Francoise are listed by the Huguenot Society with that spelling, although the ship's list has Lorange. If birth or baptismal records are found showing Lorange, please share! If you disagree with L'Orange, please postpone the merge and discuss - see this G2G discussion. ~ Noland-165 01:01, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Disputed Children

A previous version of this profile, without source, attached Lucretia (Weaver) Hudson as a child. Lucretia is not named in Samuel's 1769 will and she was born in 1760, when Francoise was already 65 years old.

Additional Notes

Something is possibly amiss with a family tree on FamilySearch.org: Daniel Guerrant, Jr. was born circa 1699, a son of Daniel Guerrant and Marie L'Orange.... and Marie was a daughter of Francis L'Orange and Francoise Rouvierre. If that were truly the case, Daniel married his maternal aunt!? See also: https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/M3BM-Z77/marie-l%27-orange-1663-1730

Nicholas Souille/Souillie left a Will in Goochland county Virginia in 1735. His estate included of a tract of land on the south side of the James River in Henrico county, Now Powhatan. This 133 acre Patent (782) was obtained October 31, 1716

I have always understood that Claud Rouvierre was Francoise Rouvierre’s brother not her father. The child in question in that record was the child of Francoise L’Orange and grandchild of Francoise Rouvierre. Claud was the uncle. This biography makes him into the great grandfather and anglicizes his name as “Rivers”.

From Turff & Twigg:

“The 18th August 1721, was born Daniel, the son of Daniel Guerrant and Francoise [L’Orange] Guerrant, his father and mother; he was baptized the __ October, by Mr. Fontaine; he was presented for baptism by Daniel Guerrant his grandfather and Madame L’Orange, his grandmother, which they have declared this child was born the day and year above. The 12th October 1728 was born a daughter to Daniel Guerrand named Francoise; was baptized by Mr. Mason. Had for godfather Claude Rovierre for godmother Francoise L’Orange. “

Lorange-1 and L'Orange-3 appear to represent the same person because: same name, death info, spouse, shared children (and birth dates within 5 years). See https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/722005/ for discussion of L'Orange as LNAB.

I think that the LNAB might better be L'Orange. I removed PPP from this profile - please see the G2G discussion.
