Biography

Paulin LaGrange, son of Henri LaGrange and Catherine Moreau, was born on 11 December 1799 in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. He was baptized on 22 May 1800 at St. Francis of Pointe Coupee church. His sponsors were Paulin Chustz and Madeline Oliveau.[1] He was always thereafter known as "Paul."

He and Eugenie Marks, daughter of Andre Marks and Marie Anne Meche, applied for a marriage license on 26 December 1823 at the Opelousas Courthouse.[2] They were married on 30 December 1823, as recorded by Father Francois Cellini in the registers of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish. Witnesses were Albert Lefort and Louis Guedry.[3]

They had the following known children:[4]

  1. Paulin Lagrange, b. 1 Jan 1826, d. 1 Aug 1827
  2. Placide Lagrange, b. 1 Feb 1828
  3. Sosthene Lagrange, b. 28 Mar 1830
  4. Asema Lagrange, b. 31 Mar 1832
  5. Felonise Lagrange, b. 12 Aug 1834
  6. Elizabeth Lagrange, b. about Feb 1837
  7. Azelie Lagrange, b. 3 Feb 1839
  8. Marie Lagrange, b. 22 Jul 1840
  9. Catherine Lagrange, b. 8 Aug 1843
  10. Emelie Lagrange, b. 20 Sep 1848[5]
  11. [?] Eugenie Lagrange, b. about 1849, d. 7 Sep 1868[5]

Their home was located along Bayou Teche according to the 1830 census of St. Landry Parish. It included two boys under the age of five.[6] By 1850, their children Placide, Sosthene, "Arenia", Felonise, Elisabeth, "Arelu", Marie and Catherine were present. A two-year-old female child, "E. Devereux", was also living with the family. Paul was a planter, with real estate valued at $800.[7] They also owned five slaves, ranging in age from 1 to 24 years old.[8]

The family hasn't been found on the 1840 or 1860 censuses.

Paul died at age 66 on 11 October 1866, and was probably buried at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church cemetery in Grand Coteau.[9] His succession was filed at the Opelousas courthouse on 29 October 1866.[10]

Slaves

1840 census - need to find this family. Note: I browsed manually through the St. Landry census of 1840 and found no Lagrange or likely mistranscriptions. Searched every Paul* in Louisiana, found nothing that could have been interpreted as Lagrange. His name was probably either butchered beyond recognition, he was missed on the census, or his household was under another name. Bjorkgren-1 14:02, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

1850 census, St. Landry Parish; slaves listed:[8]

  • 1 black female, age 24
  • 1 black male, age 20
  • 1 black male, age 15
  • 1 mulatto male, age 3
  • 1 mulatto male, age 1

1860 census - need to find this family.

  5. 5.0 5.1 It's possible that Emelie and Eugenie were actually the same person. One has birth info only, and the other has death info only. Emelie would have been 19 at the time of Eugenie's death, just a few days short of her 20th birthday, which is consistent with the death record. Neither of the children are found in any other records.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Paul by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Paul:
