Biography

Birth

Mary was born about 1853 in Minnesota Territory. (1900, 1910 censuses) Her maiden surname was "Lamere". (Mar. Rec.) The Lameres, including Mary, are descendants of Oliver Lamère, a French Canadian:

Catherine Armel, Oliver’s first born, married Oliver
Lamere, a Frenchman from Canada who located
first at Lake Koshkonong. When the Winnebagoes
went to Long Prairie, he went with them, making
several trips to Wisconsin, finally locating in the
vicinity of Madison, where he died. He had three sons,
Moses, Joseph, and Frank, and two daughters, Elizabeth
and Mary. Elizabeth was the mother of Angel Decora."
(Jipson, 256)

Name

The 1898 census shows that her Hocąk name was the highly unusual Mary-ho-no-nic-kaw, which is for Mary-xųnųnįka, "Little (Young) Mary" (Per. Rec.), the conjoining of an Anglo name with suffixes often found in Hocąk names.

Marriage

She married Henry Rave sometime prior to 1875 when her second daughter, Marguerite was born. By at least 1886 (census) she had separated from Henry.

According to the 1900 Federal census, she had a daughter with Late Rave, whom she must have married by 1891.

Children

She had the following children with Henry Rave:

Anglo Name Hocąk Name Meaning Birth Source
Marguerite Nį-amą́nįwįga She Walks on Water 21 Nov 1875 1898 census
Battiste Turner Hąbᵋmą́nįga Walking Day 1878 1898 census
Peter Miną́́ka He Who is Seated 1880 1898 census

By about 1891, she married Late Rave and had a daughter by him:

Hocąk Name Meaning Birth Source
Mąnąhąbᵋwįga She Who Throws Out Dirt 1892 1900 Fed. census

The names of all her children are consistent with membership in the Bear Clan.

Death

She passed away sometime between 30 June 1912 and 30 June 1913, since she is in the census of the former year, but not the latter onward. (1912, 1913 censuses)
