I grew up in Georgia, my mom was from there,my dad was from upstate New York, they met during WWII when he was stationed in Macon, Georgia. My mom was big into genealogy, she knew a great deal off the top of her head, so I learned much from her. With dad's family, I only knew my aunts and uncles, that I met when on vacation in New York. It was my lack of knowledge of his family that led me to Ancestry to find out more. I had difficulty at first making the connection from New York to Canada (it took a year). I finally figured out how my grandfather Joseph LaPlante had changed the name from Plante to LaPlante because he tho0ught that his father had Anglicized it, but in reality it was just Plante. After that I was able to follow back through the Drouin Catholic records and trace the family back to France. With my mom's linage it was much easier because I had heard the family names all my life since childhood. I have been working on my tree for about 7 years now.
