Biography

Esther LaRose was born in Lansingburgh, Rensselaer County, New York, on 11 October 1854, the daughter of Pierre LaRose and his wife, born Esther Dupont.^[1]

The 1855 New York state census recorded Hester Larose, less than 1 year old, in her parents' household in Lansingburgh. Her father, Peter Larose, was age 30, born in Canada, working in the express business. Her mother, Hester Larose, was age 32, also born in Canada. Their children were Peter Larose, 9, born in Canada, and Wm Larose, 4, and infant Hester Larose, both born in Rensselaer County. The household also included Joseph Larose, age 21, a boarder, born in Canada.^[2]

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded her as Esther E. La Rose, age 5, born in New York, in the Albany, New York, household of Peter La Rose, age 35, and Esther La Rose, age 36, both born in Canada. Her father was an expressman by occupation. Others in the household were Peter L La Rose, 14, born in Canada; Willam A La Rose, 9, born in New York; Authinie F. La Rose (male), 18, born in Canada, not listed with the family and recorded as a clerk, but likely to be a relative; a female servant born in Ireland and a male clerk born in New York.^[3]

In 1873 she married Joel Chandler Harris.
