Biography

This profile is part of the Labossiere Name Study.

This is one of the major name changes of the surname, Labossiere to Bussell. This seems to have occurred before or with the1880 U.S. census.

Jean Baptiste Labossière was born and baptized June 16, 1834 [1] at St-Luc, Bas-Canada. He was the fourth child of eight and the second of five sons for Jean Baptiste Labossière and Celeste Lord. Two of his older siblings, who were twins died as infants, so he would never know them. He was the second child in this family to be named Jean Baptiste, after an earlier son with the same name had died as an infant.

His family moved from Canada to New York state about 1846 and Jean Baptiste is next found in the U.S. 1850 census [2] with his parents and five siblings, living at Hartford in Washington County. His forenames have become, simply, John and the family surname has been corrupted into, "Labouden".

John LaBossiere has not been found in the 1855 New York state census,[3] but his family has been found and they had moved a little to Hebron, NY, still in Washington County. The surname, Labossiere, has been corrupted to, "Lavenshee".

John's mother, Celeste Lord died in Jan. 1860 and is buried at Hebron, NY. She was only 52 years old. John's youngest sister, Josephine was not yet six years, so would barely remember her mother. John's father did not remarry, but it would appear that John went home to help the family as he is found with them again in the U.S. 1860 census [4] John and two siblings, Samuel and Josephine are also living with their father. Another brother, Ephraim has recently married and is living next door with his wife, Susan and John's brother, Manasse.

John Labossiere married Adaline Kee about 1862, most likely in or near Hebron, New York. The marriage record has not been found, but they are listed as being married 38 years in the U.S. 1900 census. [5] John's surname, Labossiere has somehow become, "Buzzell". John's birth is recorded as June 1834 in Quebec which matches his baptism. The 1901 marriage record of his son, Walter LaBossiere - Bussell [6] shows that John Bussell was married to Adaline Kee.

1865 New York State Census Washington CO. Hebron, ED 1 P. 35 lines 9-13: Jean Baptiste lavisher (Labossiere), 31; Adaline Lavisher (Labossiere, nee Kee or Ree), 27; two children: Rosaline A, 2 years, 11 months; Emma E., 18 months; wife's brother: Samuel Keys, 25. [7]

In 1870, John and his wife, Adeline are still living at Hebron, Washington County, New York. They have two daughters, Emma, 3 and Libby, 1 as well as a new born infant, named Martha Martin. The surname has now been corrupted into, "Bunel" and Adeline is listed as, "Adoline".

John Labossiere - Buzzell and his wife, Adaline Kee are found in the U.S. 1880 census [8] John's widowed father, Jean Baptiste LaBossiere, AKA John Bussell is also living with them at this time. They have moved to Malta, Saratoga County, NY.

US 1900 census New York, Saratoga, ED 105 Ballston Spa Village, Sheet 7B, lines 74-77 Jean Baptiste Labossiere AKA Buzzell-Adaline Kee and 2 children; Walter, aged 29; Addie May, aged 19 and a boarder, Howard Smith, aged 15 years. [9]

Jean Baptiste Labossiere, AKA John Bussell died Oct. 27, 1904 at Ballston Spa, Saratoga, NY and he was buried at the village cemetery. [10] His wife, Adaline Kee died there on May 24, 1909 and they share a common resting place.

It is not known how the name changed from Labossiere to Bussell or Buzzell, but John's date of birth on his gravestone and other records match his baptism record thus it is felt that this is the same person.
