Biography

George was born in 1743 in Ireland. He was the son of Unknown Lackey. He died in about 1841 in Iredell County, North Carolina.[1]

Revolutionary Service

1776 Project
George Lackey Sr. served with Mecklenburg County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

State of North Carolina, Iredell County[2]

On this 6th September day of September 1832 personally appeared before me James Campbell a justice of the peace in and for the County and State aforesaid George Lackey aged 77 years and who I certify from his age and infirmities is unable without great inconvenience to attend at the Court of Said County and who being first Sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed the 7th of June 1832.

That he entered the Service of the United States and served under the following named officers as is herein Stated. That his first tour he was a Volunteer to Serve his country and served under Capt. Morrison [Neal Morrison] to Cross Creek. That afterwards he ranged the mountains another tour under the same Captain, that he Served another tour under Captain Crawford [James Crawford] and afterwards under Capt. Sloan [Johnson Sloan]"' and was marched as far as Monks Corner [Moncks Corner] in South Carolina. That he served another tour under Capt. Sharpe [William Sharpe] to Broad River in South Carolina. This next tour of duty was under Capt. Periacquer [James Purviance] at the time of the battle of Ramsour's bridge [sic, Ramsour's Mill?]. His next tour was under "'Capt. Penny [possibly William Penny of the Rowan County North Carolina militia, his name is also spelled "William Penney"] and marched to the neighborhood of Wilmington, that he served several short tours of duty besides the foregoing. That he honestly & conscientiously believes that he served more than eighteen months in actual Service during the revolutionary war.

He was born in Ireland in the Kingdom of Great brittain and about the year 1759 came to America. His age is recorded in his Bible.

He was living in Rowan now Iredell County at the time he entered the Service and lives there still. That the Militia was called and when the time came for his class to Serve he always turned out. Does not remember every officer of the Regular Army. Was engaged in some Skirmishing with the British army. He never took any discharges. Refer to Thomas Lackey &c And he has no documentary evidence nor does he know that his can procure any testimony to certify of his Service except the subjoined. And I thereby relinquish every claim to a pension or annuity except the present and do declare that my name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State.

Sworn & Subscribed before me this 6th day of September 1832
