Jean was born in 1789. He was the son of Jean Lacroix and Marie Anne Fradet. He married Marie Mainville, widow of Pierre Sanschagrin, in 1815.[1] He passed away in 1855.[2]
The baptismal record in Saint-Charles gives François as the eldest child of Jean Joseph Lacroix and Marie Anne Fradet. The couple never had a child simply named Jean or yet Jean Baptiste. Since they later had a Jean François (known as François) and the year of birth aligns with a later census record, we assume that the record dated 1789 is Jean's.
Jean is believed to have fought with the British forces in the War of 1812. A Jean Lacroix served in the Canadian Voltigeurs.[3] The Land Petitions of Lower Canada name a Private Jean La Croix who received a land certificate for 100 acres in the Township of Ely (Range 6, Lot 18); the certificate was dated August 25, 1823.[4] A notarized transaction dated January 20, 1835 identify this Jean Lacroix, the proprietor of a plot of 100 acres in Ely Township, as a resident of Saint-Césaire.[5] The Jean Lacroix of this profile and his wife baptized their last known child in Saint-Césaire in 1835 and we are not aware of any other Jean Lacroix residing in that parish at the time. Pending further documentation, it appears this Jean Lacroix did in fact see service in the War of 1812 (in the "bataillons de milice incorporée" according to the 1835 land transaction).
