Biography

John was born about 1780.

John LACY, bachelor married Rosanna DOUGLAS, spinster 27th September 1801 at Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen, Spitalfields, London, England. Witnessed by Alexander DOUGLAS and George ASHTON {parish clerk}[1]

John was occupied as a porter[2] and lived at Knightsbridge, Chelsea and Kensington, London, England.

In 1813, John was living at Hooper's Court, when daughter Lucy was baptised[2].

In 1815 John and his family were living at New Road, Chelsea when daughter Lucy was buried[3].

John is believed to have died between 1822 (last child baptised) and 31st December 1831 (wife remarried as a widow[4]) although he could have deserted.

Research Notes

John's year of birth is estimated from that of his wife's year of birth and the fact he was a bachelor when he married in 1801. It is likely he would have been a few years older than his wife and probably about 21 when he married, although Rose Ann was very young (just 16 years old).

It is possible he is the son of William & Martha LACEY baptised October 1779 at St. Marylebone, Middlesex, England[14]

Although recorded as a Locksmith[15] on daughter Lavinia Lucy LACEY's marriage, all other documents (baptisms of children) show he was a porter.

Possible additional children:

  • William LACEY buried 2 July 1826 at St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex aged 2 years 6 months (b. about January 1824) of New Road {Chelsea}[16]
  • Robert LACEY bur. July 26th 1829 aged 19 {b. 1810} buried St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex. Of New Road {Chelsea}[17]
  • George LACEY buried 4th October 1829 at St. Luke Chelsea, Middlesex, England aged 3 years (b. abt. 1826) of New Road {Chelsea}[18] Died of water on the brain.[19]
