Biography

GILBERT DE LACY (or Lascy) of Ewyas Lacy, Herefordshire, was the son and heir apparent of Walter de Lacy, of Weobsley, Herefordshire and Margery (or Margaret), daughter of William de Brewes of Bramber, Sussex.[1][2]

He married Isabel le Bigod, daughter of Hugh le Bigod, Magna Carta Surety, 5th Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk and Maud Marshall and they had the following children:

  • Walter,[2] son and heir, died betw. 1238-1241, married Rohese (or Rose) le Boteler (or Butler), no ch.;[1]
  • Margery,[2] wife of Sir John de Verdun;[1]
  • Maud,[2] married 1st to Peter (or Pierre) de Geneva, and 2nd to Sir Geoffrey, Lord Geneville, seigneur of Vaucouleurs.[1]

Gilbert de Lacy was held hostage for his father in Aug 1215.[1]

He died shortly before 25 Dec 1230 and was buried at Llanthony Priory, Wales.[1][2]

Note: Llanthony Prima Priory (Llanthonia Primus), located in the Vale of Ewyas, in Brecon National Park, north of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales. The Priory was once one of the great medieval buildings of Wales. In the 12th century, the Lacy family assumed patronage of the priory, endowed it with land and it soon became famous, enjoying royal patronage. In 1538, the priory was closed by Henry VIII, its lands were sold and the priory was left to decay. At present, the fine ruins of this Priory seen today are in the care of the Wales government group Cadw. Welsh attacks in the 13th century forced the Priory to move to Gloucester and build a second priory there, known as Llanthony Secunda Priory. See Wikipedia for more.
