Grace was born in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia on 2 February 1892 to Thomas Haliburton Laidlaw and Margaret Thomson.[1][2] The following birth notice was published in the Victorian newspaper, The Hamilton Spectator, on 16 February 1892:[2]

LAIDLAW. — On the 2nd inst., at " Killora," Hamilton, the wife of T. H. Laidlaw - a daughter.

Grace married Lancelot Ashley Lewis in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 13 April 1921.[3] The following report of the marriage was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Burra Record, on 4 May 1921:[4]

Lewis — Laidlaw. The marriage of Gretta, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs T. H. Laidlaw, 'Kilora,' Hamilton, Victoria, and Lancelot Ashley, youngest son of the Hon. John Lewis, "Benacre,'" Glen Osmond, South Australia, was celebrated at Scot's Church, Collins St., Melbourne, on Tuesday, April 12, the Rev. Dr. Marshall being the officiating minister.
The church was beautifully decorated in a scheme of gold and white, autumn tinted oak leaves being combined with creamy tinted cactus dahlias, roses and tuberoses. The pews had tall standards surmounted by handsome shower posies, half-way up the aisle was an arch, whilst the pulpit was arranged with similar flowers and foliage. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore an exquisite frock of ivory supple satin, gold embroidery. Her train was of creme satin brocaded with gold and over it to almost its full length fell a long tulle veil edged with delicate lace, picked out with gold. She carried a sheaf of dark creme gladiola tied with gold tissue ribbons. The bridesmaids were Miss Bea Laidlaw (sister) and Miss Eileen Hurst. Their frocks were palest yellow charmeuse and fillets of gold embroidered gauze, finished with hand made flowers, from which fell panels of pale gold tulle. Four small children were also in attendance, two as trainbearers, and two carrying baskets of pink and white rose leaves, which they strewed before the bride and bridegroom is they left the church. These tiny tots were Ashley Melrose (bridegroom's niece), Judy Thornleigh, Lorraine Cumming and Janey Harper, who wore Kate Greenaway frocks with narrow frills of lace at the foot of the scalloped skirts. Mr Elliott Murray was best man and Mr Keith Duncan groomsman. After the ceremony Mr and Mrs T. H. Laidlaw entertained about 300 guests at Mandeville Hall, Toorak (Vic. ). The bridal party received in the drawing-room, and the wonderful wedding tea was served in a huge marquee. Exquisite roses and carnations decked the tables and the menu cards were hand-painted by the bride. Each guest received a tiny gilt bandbox filled with rose leaves, confetti and a dress posy. Later in the afternoon Mr and Mrs Lance Lewis left for Macedon, the bride travelling in an Egyptian red duvelyn costume, stitched in pastel shades, and a champagne coloured toque with wings. The bride's mother, whose birthday it was, wore a gown of black satin bengaline and ninoa trimmed with filmy black lace, the hat of black hatter's plush had lace as trimming. Mrs John Lewis (stepmother of bridegroom), black satin broche, trimmed with silk applique, and her black satin hat had touches of gentian blue.
Others present were Hon. John Lewis, Mr and Mrs Essington Lewis, Dr and Mrs Cowan, Mr and Mrs Alec Melrose, Miss M. Barker and other South Australian friends.

Grace died in Glen Osmond, South Australia on 22 May 1968 at the age of 76 years.[5]

Grace's remains were cremated at the Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia on 25 May 1968 and the ashes were interred at the Burra Cemetery in Burra, South Australia on 27 May 1968.[6][7]
