Biography

William was the son of James Laidlaw and Helen Scott, baptised in June 1798 in Ettrick[1].
Husband of Mary Scott;
Father of James Laidlaw, Ellen Laidlaw, John Scott Laidlaw, Robert Laidlaw; Thomas Laidlaw and Jane Laidlaw. Scottish Baptism Records exist for James, Robert and Thomas[2].

Mentioned in biography of descendant notable author Alice Munro.

Emigrated to Will County, Illinois in 1836 via the port of New York. William and wife Mary were the parents of 4 sons before they emigrated, according to Alice Munro bio.

William died of cholera (? in one family source) in Illinois in 1839, after which his brother Andrew escorted Mary Scott Laidlaw and her children to Upper Canada (Ontario) by ox-cart to live near the Laidlaw brothers. [3]
