Biography

Samuel was born around 1853,[1][2][3][4][5] May 1856,[6] 20 May 1857,[7][8] or around 1859[9][10] in Ireland.[1][6][7][8][9][10] (See Note on Birth Location) His parents were William Laird and Mary Russell.[7]

Around 1870, he immigrated the the United States.[1][8][9]

In 1870, he was living in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States.[1]

He married Hannah Kenworthy[2][11][12] 31 December 1874 in Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.[2]

Together they had 2 children:
  1. Willie Laird, b. September 1877, d. 9 August 1878.[11]
  2. Bruce Laird, b. 23 January 1880.[12]

Hannah died of anemia 8 May 1880, only 3 months after the birth of their son Bruce Laird.[13]

By June 1880, Samuel was living with John and Sarah Scott, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. John Scott was probably his uncle-in-law.[3] His mother-in-law, Lucinda (Scott) Kenworthy, and infant son, Bruce, lived nearby.[14]

He married Jennie Forrest[4][5][6][7][8][9][15][16][17][18] 27 June 1882 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.[4][5]

Together they had children:
  1. Jennie Laird, b. 20 August 1883.[6][15]
  2. Mary Laird, b. 6 April 1886, d. 13 April 1886.[16]
  3. Thomas P Laird, b. 15 August 1889.[17]
  4. Samuel Russell Laird,[6][8][9][10][18] b. around 1885,[10] 15 August 1889,[6][18] or around 1891.[8][9]

He passed away 28 May 1932 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.[7]

Note on Birth Location Samuel was born in Ireland.[1][6][7][8][9][10][19][20][21] However, several sources report he was born in Chester County,[2] Pennsylvania, United States,[2][3][14][22] and his 1st marriage record reports his last place of residence (Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States) rather than his birthplace (Ireland).[1][2]
