Biography

John Walter Lake was the fifth child born into the family of Florentine Lake (1832-1906) and Delilah Scott (1835-1928). The first three of his siblings had been born in Linn county, but starting with his next older sister, Nancy Epheline, the rest were born in Ellis township of Hardin county, Iowa. In 1870 he was one of eight children at home; Joe, Mary, Harry, Nancy, John, James, Will and Neal.[1] The first home he lived in measured 16' X 20' made of logs until 1876 when a frame house 28' X 28' was built. Little brother Charles Augustus was born in the little log house, making nine children up to that point. Charlie died at age 4 of croup. John's youngest sibling Nellie Estella was born 1876. In 1877 his oldest sister, Mary, married a neighbor boy, William Winterfield. That made for eight children at home in 1880.[2] His sister Nancy was married in 1881 to Walter Miller and Joe married Mary McConnelogue in 1885. Harry had moved out and was living with Joe and Mary. That left five children at home in 1885, but their were two other residents. One was his father's mother, Eveline Warden age 75 and the other one was a young lady age 15 from Illinois named Della Cunningham.[3]

He married Jennie Sunderland on 11 September 1890 in Hardin county, Iowa. Mary Jane was born on 8 June 1871 in Staffordshire, England and was the daughter of George Sunderland (1846-??) and Margaret Giltrap (1846-1928).[4] "They lived near Cottage a while, then near and in Alden. Then they moved to Vegerville, Calgary and Holden, Canada."[5]

John and Jennie had two daughters. Delilah Effiline was born in 1892 in Ellis township and Grace Florentine was born there in 1893.[6][7] The girls attended Cottage school with their cousins for a few years before they moved north to Alden township sometime after 1905. Their family did not stay in Alden for very long until moving to Canada before 1911. That year they were recorded on the Canadian census living in Strathcona Sub-Districts 1-32, Alberta, Canada.[8] They had four lodgers living in their home and one of them was a young man born in Ontario named Archie Foran, age 23. The 1916 Canada Census has restricted access to the original image, so the transcription simply states that their residence was Township: 13, Province: Alberta, District Number: 43 Victoria, Sub-District Number: 19, Enumeration District: 13.[9] This terminology does not readily pinpoint a physical location, but is probably one of the places mentioned by Aunt June.

His daughter Grace married Archie Foran about 1913. Lila married William Hayes in 1914 at Holden. Grace and Archie had three sons, the oldest and youngest of whom were killed during WWII. Lilah and William had two daughters. William was the son of William Henry Hayes (1837-1898) and Elizabeth Bell (1847-1921) and was a druggist. He was elected to the Alberta legislature in 1935 and died in 1939 while still in office and was buried in Edmonton. Lilah subsequently married David Titus Wilson, who had four daughters, and relocated to Vancouver, B.C.

John died in 1943 at Holden. His burial was in the Holden Cemetery.[10]
