Biography

James Scott lake was born on 14 November 1864 in Ellis township of Hardin county, Iowa. He carried his mother's maiden name as his middle name. His parents, Florentine and Delilah, had brought their family from Lynn county, Iowa to Hardin county a few years before. His father was born in Coshocton county, Ohio in 1832 and his mother was born in Mongomery county, Indiana in 1835. They had met and married in Lynn county. Jim have three older brothers and three younger, although the youngest brother, Charles, had died at age four. He had two older sisters and one younger sister, for a total of nine siblings. They all grew up on the farm near the village of Cottage in Ellis township.^[1][2][3] A few interesting details of the household in 1885, is the presence of James' grandmother Eveline [sic] who was age 75. There is also a 15 year old girl living there named Della Cunningham.

He married Flora Adell (Della) Cunningham on 19 February 1889 in Eldora, the county seat of Hardin county.^[4] They resided near his father's farm.^[5][6] They had four children, Floyd Florentine 1890, Elsie June 1891, Charles James 1892 and Esther Marie 1901. His father died in 1906 and his mother chose to live in their home. Their son, Charlie, was married in 1909. In 1910, Floyd and the two girls were at home with their grandmother.^[7] Then, Floyd married in 1911 and June married in 1912. Floyd's wife died soon after having their first baby, Evelyn, who was taken and raised like a daughter by Jim and Della. Floyd married a second time in 1918. In 1920, Jim and Della have his mother, Delilah, their daughter, Esther, and granddaughter, Evelyn at home.^[8] Esther married in 1923. Jim's house may have been bursting at the seams in 1925, with twelve occupants. Besides himself, Della, Deliilah and Evelyn, his son, Charlie's family of eight are under the same roof. Another interpretation of the census may be that Charlie's family is living next door because he is listed as head of household. The house number 12 is next to Flora's name and house number 13 is next to Delilah's, but neither James or Charlie have house numbers by their names, which may have confused how it was indexed. James and Evelyn are indexed in one house, Della was by herself, Delilah [Deliaah] was by herself and Charlie's family was indexed in their own house.^[9] Jim's mother died in 1928. Their household in 1930 included only Evelyn, age 14.^[10] Their son, Charlie, died in 1933 and Evelyn was married in 1934. It was just Jim and Della and a hired hand at home in 1940.^[11]

Jim died on 13 May 1943 in the same place where he had been born. His burial was in the Cottage Cemetery.^[12]
