Biography

Thomas Lakin was named in the will of his son William Lakin of Ruddington, dated 7 February 1633^[1][2] (see transcription of will in Images for this profile). Other than this there is no record of Thomas. He was not named in the Mar 1642 Protestation Return for Ruddington,^[3] nor in the 1664 and 1674 hearth tax in Nottinghamshire, so he likely died before these lists were compiled.

Estimate for Year of Birth: Assuming that William's mother was Thomas' first marriage, that William was Thomas' first child, and that Thomas married and had children in line with 16th century averages for men, we can estimate a very rough range for a year of birth of 1560 to 1570. Even this range should be taken with extreme caution.

Research Notes

The William Lakin who died in Groton, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 10 Dec 1672, age about 91 (b. ca. 1581) was originally believed to be the father of William Lakin (d. 1633) and therefore the grandfather of the immigrants John and William Lakin. Subsequent research in original sources has shown that William Lakin's father was named Thomas, and the relationship of this elder William to the rest of the Lakin family of Ruddington cannot be determined.
