From Find a Grave on Piney Woods [Quaker] Monthly Meeting ... "The Piney Woods Monthly Meeting has been in continuous existence since the 1670's. However, the current Piney Woods Meeting House and cemetery date only from the mid 1800s. Prior to that time, Friends were buried on their own land or in various Quaker cemeteries either in unmarked graves or with simple fieldstone markers. In rare cases, an initial or two was added. The reason for the lack of personal gravestones was their desire for simplicity and humility in death as in life. Rather than permanent personal memorials in stone, they preferred for the record of their lives, particularly their opposition to slavery, to stand witness to their understanding of the Inner Light. At the same time Quakers kept meticulous records in their Monthly Meetings, so that we do know the major life events of each Friend including their death dates. It is only their burial places which remain unknown. This cenotaph has been established for the descendants of the early members of the Piney Woods Meeting whose graves are not marked in the modern Piney Woods cemetery. but whose lives were important for their families and for the early history of North Carolina."
