The birth date and place of birth for Mary Elizabeth varies in numerous records. The earliest confirmed record to give an age was the 1850 census, in which she was reportedly 18 years old (giving an approximate birth year of 1832) and born in Ohio.[1] This is the date that has been adopted for this profile, as being the nearest to a contemporary record, however her birth place was more likely Indiana. The various dates and places are abstracted in the following table.

Source Age Birth year Place of birth
1850 census[1] 18 1832 (extrapolated) Ohio
1860 census[2] 26 1834 (extrapolated) Indiana
1870 census[3] 33 1837 (extrapolated) Illinois
1880 census[4] 50 1830 (extrapolated) Indiana

Jonathan Hoyt and Mary Lamb (under the name Mary E. Moor) were married in Mason county, Illinois on 16 Sept 1847 by William Parker, a Justice of the Peace.[9][10][11]

Maiden Name

Although her surname appeared on her marriage record to Jonathan Hoyt as Moor or Moore, it is believed that Mary's maiden name was Lamb. It is currently unclear whether she was previously married or if there is another explanation (such as a stepfather) for the two names.

Mary's maiden name was recorded as Lamb (or a variation) on:

  • her son Harvey Wilbur Hoyt's 1891 marriage record[12]
  • her son Fred A. Hoyt's delayed certificate of birth, recorded in 1949[13]
  • her son Fred Hoyt's 1907 marriage record[14]
  • her son Henry Hoyt's 1934 death record

Mary's maiden name was recorded as Moore (or a variation) on:

  • her daughter Lyda J. Hoyt's 1888 marriage record[15]
  • her daughter Elizabeth J. Hoyt's 1888 marriage record[16]
  • her son Edward Elias Hoyt's 1934 death certificate[17]

Mary was enumerated as Elizabeth Hoyt on the 1850 census with her husband Johnathan HOYT in Mason county, Illinois. According to this census, she was 18 years old and born in Ohio.[1]

In the 1860 census, they were still in Mason county, Illinois, and they now had three children. Also in the household was a 23-year-old male named Henry Brady, possibly a boarder. In this census, Mary was recorded as being 26 years old and born in Indiana.[2]

The family remained in Mason county, Illinois, in the 1870 census, now specifically in Salt Creek Township. Johnathan and Mary had six children living in the household with them. Mary was recorded as 33 years old and born in Illinois.[3]

By the 1880 census, they had relocated to Union Township, Cass county, Iowa. Mary was again recorded under her middle name of Elizabeth. Six of their children were still residing with them. Mary was reported as 50 years old and born in Indiana. According to this census, both of her parents were born in Ohio.[4]

In the 1895 Iowa state census, Jonathan and Mary, along with their 19-year-old son Frederick, were in Cumberland, Cass county, Iowa. Mary was recorded as 68 years old and born in "Indianna." The religious belief of the entire family was "Christian."[5]

Mary appeared as the sole member of her household in the 1900 census, her husband Jonathan having passed away in 1896. Despite being widowed, she was recorded as married in this census. Her age was given as 69 years old, with a specific birth date of Apr 1821. However, this birth date would make her 79 years old, not 69. This census also gives the additional information that she was married 40 years, and was the mother of 14 children, 8 still living. She was reported as born in Indiana. According to this census, her father was also born in Indiana, but her mother was born in Ohio. Mary's occupation for the first time was recorded as "Farmer," and she owned her farm with no mortgage. She could neither read nor write.[6]

The last census in which Mary appeared was the 1905 Iowa state census. She was still in Edna Township, Cass county, Iowa, but was now recorded as not owning her own home or farm. Her age was recorded as 80, and her birth place as Indiana. This time, the birth place of both of her parents was marked as "dont know."[7]

Children

The 1900 census reported that Mary was the mother of 14 children, 8 of whom were still living at the time of the census.[6] The six deceased children are currently unknown. The eight surviving children were:

Francis Abbott Hoyt (abt 1855)
James Alonzo Hoyt (abt 1858)
Harvey Wilbur Hoyt (1859)
Vina Hoyt (abt 1862)
Edward Elias Hoyt (1864)
Lydia Hoyt (1869)
Elizabeth Josephine Hoyt (abt 1874)
Frederick Artie Hoyt (1875)[13]
