Biography

Birth

Date: 4 July 1732
Place: Nansemond County, Virginia

Death

Date: aft 1803
Source: Styles
Note: The last official reference to Reuben Lamb, Sr. that I have seen is the mention of him on the 1779 tax roles of Randolph County, North Carolina. Styles, however, states that he was a resident of Randolph County in 1800. Thus, the death date, "after 1800."
Later: "The 1803 Tax List of Randolph County lists these sons of Henry and Elizabeth: Thomas Lamb, 1 white poll, 30 acres of land; Joseph Lamb, 1 white poll, 174acres; Isaac Lamb, 1 white poll, 161 acres; Jacob Lamb, 1 white poll, 300 acres; Reuben Lamb, 1 white poll, no land. - p. 17. This entry is the basis for changing Reuben's death date from "after 1800" to "after 1803."

Notes

Some pertinent quotes from Marshall Styles' well-researched book. Much of this comes from Hinshaw's Quaker Records, among other sources:
"Perquimans, 1 October 1760, Thomas and Reuben Lamb, sons of Henry, request certificate to New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford / Rowan County, North Carolina, and received there on 29 November 1760." - p. 25.

All below, pp. 27-8:

"Reuben Lamb was born on 4 Jul 1732 in Nansemond County, VA. He was a resident of Randolph County, NC in 1800. About six months before his father died in Rowan County, he requested a certificate on 1 Oct 1760 to join the New Garden Monthly Meeting. He remained there until mid-1766, where he rejoined, on 4 June, the Perquimans County Friends Meeting... -- Hinshaw, NC.
"1773 Debtors of Col. John McGee,Orange County, NC", The North Carolina Genealogical Journal Vol I, No.1, January 1975, lists Reuben Lamb.
1779 Tax List, Randolph County, "Persons that had not taken the Oath of Allegiance, refusing or neglecting to return Inventories of their taxables, Joseph Hinds District.... Reuben Lamb."
"He was married to Martha Moore (daughter of Robert Moore and Hannah Manwaring) on 4 Aug 1756 in Piney Woods, Perquimans, NC. Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, pp. 57, 60, 556, "1756, 8, 4, Martha Moore reported married to Reuben Lamb; 1765, 6, 4, Reuben Lamb and family produced certificate from New Garden Monthly Meeting, N.C.; 1765, 12, 28, Reuben Lamb and wife granted certificate to Welses Monthly Meeting, this province." Martha Moore was born on 26 Mar 1727 in Perquimans County, NC. Research of Sharon Minton Hill, September 1998. Reuben Lamb and Martha Moore had the following children:
43 i. Mary Lamb (married name Pearson) was born about 1762 in Randolph County, NC. She was disowned by the Quakers, marrying out of unity on 28 Jan 1797 in Back Creek, Randolph, NC. Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, p. 723.
+44 ii. Martha “Patty” Lamb.
45 iii. Reuben Lamb Jr was born on 16 Sep 1769 in N. Carolina. Research of Sharon Minton Hill, 9/1998. He was disowned by the Quakers, marrying out of unity on 25 Feb 1797 in Back Creek, Randolph, NC. Hinshaw, Vol I, NC, p. 723. He died on 30 Apr 1839 in Randolph County, NC. His obituary appeared in the 7 May 1839 edition of the Greensboro Patriot, NC newspaper. "Died, Reuben Lamb in Randolph County, 30 April 1839 after a 2-3 day illness. Constable for 36 years." In the Randolph County Militia records, court martial proceedings, 17 September 1809, an entry reads "Reuben Lamm, having craved on appeal from the court martial of the company to which he belonged, to this court, obtained an investigation of Subject and is considered not liable to pay the fines." Was it this Reuben Lamb? "Reuben Lamb Jr. fathered two illegitimate children by Margaret Brookshire, Emsley Brookshire and Anna or Hannah Brookshire... the Brookshire children were taken to Wayne County or Henry County, IN with Tom and Sarah Brookshire Newby in 1826," so wrote Tim Walls in a note to me on 18 Dec 1999.
46 iv. Joseph Lamb was born in N. Carolina."

I wouldn't rely on the accuracy of ANYTHING on the Ancestral File record. This is a user-submitted record and there are two widely conflicting records for his daughter Martha. Some reliable verification is needed. - Fred Remus
