Biography

In the following 1835 diary entry, Charles Ellis, Jr. recounts receiving a letter from his mother, Margaret Keeling Nimmo Ellis (Mrs. Charles Ellis) that states that Caroline Lambert became engaged to a grandson of Chief Justice John Marshall. The Ellis, Lambert and John Marshall families were all members of Monumental Church.
THE STUDENT DIARY OF CHARLES ELLIS MARCH 10 TO JUNE 25, 1835 EDITED BY Ronald B. Head University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia Fall 1976:
"April Friday 10th 1835. . . .[37] . . . .[25] . . . .Received my bundle and a letter from ma, In which, she speaks of Caroline Lambert(P47590)'s being engaged to Marshal105, grandson of Chief Justice Marshal."

However,
In a letter from Caroline Lambert to Elizabeth Galt dated 23 Jul 1835, Caroline writes that she "is tired of having people think she is engaged to someone she does not care for."

In a letter from Caroline Lambert to Elizabeth Galt dated 17 Dec 1838, Caroline mentions "the wedding of Miss Ellis to Mr. Munford." This is Charles Ellis, Jr.'s sister Elizabeth Throwgood Ellis who married Col. George Wythe Munford.

Edgar Allan Poe hoped the crowning achievement of his career to be the creation of his own literary magazine, The Stylus: A Monthly Journal of General Literature. A most touching discovery is that two of the 10 listed Richmond subscribers for The Stylus were Mrs. Caroline Harrison (#137) and her father Gen. William Lambert (#138). This suggests that they certainly met up with Poe, most likely, during his last visit in 1849. Alas, publication of The Stylus never came to be.

Caroline is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in the City of Richmond, Virginia.
