Biography
Edwin was born at Cawood, Yorksire, England about 1854, the son of James Lambert, a cordwainer and his wife Eliza. He was baptised at Cawood on 14 May 1854.[1] He is living with his parents and 3 siblings in Cawood in the 1861 Census.[2]
In the 1871 Census he is living with his widowed father and 4 siblings in Cawood, Yorkshire.[3]
On 30 Jul 1883 he married Emily Eliza Davies, daughter of William Davies at Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom. At the time he was a shoe dealer and a widower.[4]
He was granted a licence to operate the Theatre Royal Hotel in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1887.[5]
By the 1891 Census he was a hotel proprietor in Douglas, Isle of Man. His daughter Mary (by his first marriage) is living with him[6] but his wife and other children are in England. In 1892 he left the Queen's Hotel in Douglas to operate the Mount Murray Hotel.[7][8] He was licenced to operate 6 days a week.[9]
His restaurant and boarding house known as "The Colonade" in Douglas was sold by auction in 1897.[10]
In 1901 he was still in Douglas operating a boarding house and restaurants. His wife and children are living in Lancashire.[11]
He was in financial difficulties by 1902, announcing he would not be responsible for his wife's debts[12] and within a few weeks being declared bankrupt.[13] The furniture and effects of his properties was sold at auction in 1903.[14]
It seems he left the Isle of Man following his bankruptcy.
He was probably estranged from his wife and children, at least for a time - his son Sidney wrote on his Australian Army enlistment papers that his father's wherabouts were unknown and his mother lived in Welshpool (Western Australia).
An Edwin Lambert of the correct age died in Perth, Western Australia in 1928. His wife and children had migrated there in 1908 and it appears he was estranged from them, but it is possible.[15][16]
