Grand Jury of Mecklenburg Co. Virginia, Order Book 2, Page 274, May 9, 1774

“John Lambert who stands prosecuted by the Grand Jury for Adultery having been duly summoned, was solemnly called and not appearing, It is considered by the Court that he forfeit and pay to the church wardens of the parish of Saint James where the Offence was committed one thousand pounds of tobacco and cash for the use or the poor of the said parish and that he pay the costs of this prosecution and may be taken.”

“Jimmima Jackson who stands prosecuted by the Grand Jury for adultery having been duly summoned and solemnly called and not appearing. It is considered by the court that she forfeit and pay to the parish wardens of the parish of Saint James where the Offence was committed one thousand pounds of tobacco and cash for the use of the poor of the said parish and that she pay the costs of this prosecution and may be taken.”

James Blanton who stands prosecuted by the Grand Jury for fornication having been this day fully heard, It is considered by the court that he forfeit and pay to the church wardens of the parish of Saint James where the offences was committed five hundred pounds of tobacco and cash for the use of the poor of the said parish and that he pay the costs of this prosecution and may be taken.”
