Biography

John Lambly son of John Lambly and his wife, Hannah was born on 7 August 1771 in New St in the Parish of St Clement in Ipswich, Suffolk.

At the age of 12 Jack as he was known entered Greenwich College. [1] He started his life as a seaman at 16, sailing with his father on the "Chatham". At 19 he became the mate to Captain Thomas Ayres of Lynn. Offered command of a 250 ton brig "The Diamond", with a home port of Chatham. Forced to leave "The Diamond". Offered command of a 174 brig the "Friendship" launched 1794. For three years he worked for the Royal Navy as the brig was in Transport Service, then in 1795 he made his first trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia and in the Spring of 1797 sailed for Quebec where he met and married Frances Richardson returning to England to settle in Rochester, a town adjacent to Chatham. [1]

Jack apparently made the permanent move to Quebec on 18 May 1802. On January 26 1808 he printed a 27 page volume "Sailing Directions for the river St. Lawrence. From Cape Chatt to the Islands of Bic, etc.." [2] and commanded several vessels.

On May 30 1811 he was appointed Harbour master of Quebec, a position which he held till at least 1841, producing a series of scale drawings, sketches of landmarks and charts of the river. Frances died on 1 August 1834 and he married Elizabeth Hunt on 27 October 1836. In 1855-56 was living at 7 St Ann Street, Quebec (no longer standing).

Captain Jack Lambly died on 25 April 1863 in Leeds Township and was buried at the Anglican church there on 29th.
