Lady Mary Louisa Lambton, the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Durham, was born in 1819. She was the second wife of James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin. They were married in London, England, in 1846. As a teenager she had visited Canada with her father and two of her sisters, Emily and Alice.  She returned in 1847 after her husband was appointed to the governorship of Canada.
