James was born in Scotland about 1840.
He passed away at Casino, NSW, in 1932, age 92,[1] and was interred in the Casino cemetery.[2]

Mr. James Lamont, aged 92 years, a resident of the Richmond River district for many years, died at Casino on Friday night of last week. The late Mr. Lamont was a native of Scotland and arrived in New South Wales in a sailing vessel 70 years ago. He first settled in the Bega district, where he resided for 30 years. In 1892, with his wife and family, he went to Coraki district, where he followed farming pursuits until 1899, when he moved to Casino. He was a share farmer for a number of years and subsequently went into business. After his wife's death in 1921, the late Mr. Lamont resided with members of his family. Five sons and five daughters survive. Sons are: Messrs. Alexander and John (Bega), James (Taree), Thomas (Casino), and George (Wollongong). Mesdames G. Stevens (Casino), R. Harvey. (Dapto), J. Sharpe (Dunoon), W. Went (Casino), and W. Kenny (Ballina) are daughters. There are 44 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. After a short service in the Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon, at which Rev. I. H. Rogers officiated, the funeral moved to the Presbyterian portion of the Casino cemetery.
